Aboriginal and Torres Strait Education

At Latham Primary we celebrate cultural diversity and recognise particularly the importance of the history, culture and continuing contribution of the local Aboriginal peoples to the Canberra region. As per the Australian Curriculum teachers consider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into their learning and teaching program.
Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students form the Dij Kids group, which aims to
• Increase their understanding of indigenous culture
• Foster pride in their heritage
• Raise self-esteem
• Encourage leadership skills
• Participate in cultural activities and excursions to enrich learning
• Raise awareness of the significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander  culture throughout the school and wider community
The Dij Kids are encouraged to share their experiences with the class and wider community when appropriate.

Absences

Class rolls are marked at the beginning of each day.  Under the ACT Education Act 2004, it is the responsibility of parents/guardians to report their child’s absences to the school.  Parents must therefore notify the school of the reason for the absence either in a hand written note, via email or a phone call to the front office on 614 20077.

The school has a number of steps for managing absenteeism when we have not been informed as to the reason. The steps include phone calls and formal letters to parents. Any child who has a total of 7 days of unexplained absences in a school year is referred to the Network Student Engagement Team, the Network Leader and Child Youth and Family Services.

If a child needs to leave the school between 9:00am and 3:00pm a note should be given to the class teacher and parents must sign the ‘Students Sign Out’ book located at the front office.

After School Care

The service is run by YMCA of Canberra and is located on Onslow Street, operational Monday to Friday from 3.00pm and 6.00pm. YMCA After School Care provides children with opportunities to learn and develop new skills and interests, and participate in a caring and supportive environment. Programs include physical activities that develop fitness and coordination, creative art projects, music and drama experiences, and enjoyable play activities. Detailed programs are displayed at the service. A light, healthy afternoon snack is provided at After School Care.

Allergies

Latham Primary is an Allergy Friendly School. We have a number of students attending our school with severe allergies to nuts. We request that students do not bring nuts or food containing nuts to school.

Assembly

A whole school assembly is held every three weeks and hosted and run by a nominated class.  Assemblies are held on Wednesdays at 2:10pm. These assemblies provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning.

All parents and carers are welcome.
